over 12,500 local kids get
on the playing field.

2000 – January

Kelly Mann, Patti Hunter, Alison Ducharme agree to tri-chair a group to form a KidSport Chapter in Victoria at the request of Sport BC. We are to be the 10th chapter formed in the province. 

 

2000 – February

$5000 BC Summer Games Legacy donation is matched with a $5000 Victoria Foundation grant.  This formed the $10,000 base and we began fund raising with a view to being sufficiently stable to begin giving out grants.

 

2000 – April 

Launched the Chapter with media and local sport and recreation professionals to celebrate. Silken Laumann was named the organization's first Honorary Chair. 

 

2001 – June 

Lindy Van Alstine chaired the inaugural grant committee of Pete & Brenda Rushton, and Tom Woods.  The budget was $1000 per month for the 7 months June 1 – December 31, 2002. 52 boys and 32 girls were funded into Soccer (22) Hockey (42) Gymnastics (6) Karate (3) Baseball (3) Skating (1) Football (3) and Swimming (4) with a total of $7020.  

 

BC Games Society Board agrees to provide administrative support to the Chapter 

 

2002 – May 

The KidSport Golf Tournament was launched, sharing the proceeds 50/50 with Promotion Plus for Girls and Women in Sport Victoria Chapter.  Sue Keenan was the first Chair of the Committee.Committee members included Patti Hunter, Sandy Clarke, Erin Amos, Joan Wharf-Higgins, Heidi Lee, Alison Ducharme, Irene Schell and Irene Wallace. Peninsula Coop was the first corporate sponsor with $1000 donation. The event netted $2670 the first year and in 2019 made over $35,000. The event is one of the few events KidSport manages internally. 

2002 – October 

Royal Victoria Marathon Race Director Rob Reid approached KidSport to be the managers of the Thrifty Foods Kids Run.  To date participation in the event, Being one of the official charities of choice,  and corporate sponsorship by Peninsula Coop through the Charity Pledge Program has resulted in donations of approximately $605,000 over the years.

2005

Was the first year that KidSport was selected to be included as a charity of choice for Golf for Kids.  Murray Stewart and Dale Douglas head the foundation and since that first year, over $605,000 has been donated to fund children into a season of sport.

2009 – September  

Identified that we had grown to the size and sophistication that some paid staff time was required.  Patti Hunter became the General Manager (1 day a week contract).  Over the years the staffing has increased to meet the needs of the revenue being raised and the number of grants being given out.  It is now one full time position. 

2011
Promotion Plus for Girls and Women in Sport Victoria Chapter merged into KidSport to form the Active Girls Program and continue to award the Proud to Play Like a Girl leadership development grants and the Play It Forward organizational and program development grants. 

 

2013 
KidSport celebrated funding the 5000th girl and boy by having a sports news item done and picture of recipients Bracia Taylor and Gabriel Campbell.

2017 – Launch of Jon Montgomery Pizza Pigout 
Our inaugural event raises over $50,000 in one evening.  Since then,  $170,000 has been raised by this annual fun event that brings together amazing sponsorship, and generous participation from the public, athletes, donors, pizza venues and more.
